Travel Maps with charm

While travel maps are something we never thought we’d sell, we found these brilliant foldaway travel guides and had to have them.

It’s easy to check out a destination online, to spend your precious weekend head down in an i-phone finding reviews and places to go…But it’s got no charm.

And that’s something these Herb Lester city maps have in abundance.

They’re illustrated and written by people who’ve investigated and explored, done all the hard work. They bring your attention to the places you wouldn’t even think to search for on Google.

Unfold your masterpiece, such as “The Uncle’s Guide to London” (which could be called “stuff to do with kids in the capital”) but they’ve chosen a jaunty angle, one which makes all of the 29 chosen places seem even more endearing.

Or “Old New York” which reads as "the New York you've always wanted to see but feared might have disappeared for good”.

And as yet the only north of the border guide is the “Glasgow Companion” which even for us natives will throw up things we didn’t know existed or remind us of places to go.

We also have guides to Berlin and Chicago, and “It’s Nice to be alone in Paris”, which takes the opposite view to the rest of the world, that to enjoy Paris you have to be in a wine-sharing, arm linked, baguette breaking twosome. This one urges you to celebrate that great city on your own, giving you advice on how best to do it.

The city maps/travel guides are £3-£4 each, and the illustrations are worthy of wall space if you’re not planning on going anywhere anytime soon.

Fresh Flowers at Pierrot et Coco

We've been fans of Sophie Wilson's (aka "I Heart Flowers") designs since we knew she existed...so we're incredibly happy to have teamed up with her to offer beautiful fresh flower bouquets in time for St Valentine's Day.

For those with impeccable taste who like to shun the foily ballon/fluffy stuff/teddy bear/uninspired dozen red roses gift, Sophie has worked on 3 bespoke bouquets at £20, £40 and £60.

We'll have examples of each bouquet in the shop from 9th February, but having seen her beautiful work before, you should be assured they will be a delight to receive. Some options come in a vintage glass vase ready to give and display.

We'll be happy to make it easy for you. Pop in to see us anytime in the next 2 weeks and we can give you more details and take a pre-order if required. You can pick-up at a time to suit close to or on February 14th, or we can arrange free delivery in Glasgow. For those who live dangerously, we'll also have bouquets to buy and take away on Tuesday 14th...making it seem like you had it under control all along...

Opening late until Christmas...

It's the last few days of Christmas shopping, so we're opening until 7pm every evening. It's a much nicer, relaxed environment than dashing round a mall with several thousand other stressed shoppers...

Our Christmas Eve closing time is not set in stone - although we plan to close at 4pm, we'll see how it goes and if there are still shoppers desperate for a (very) last minute gift we'll open as long as we stay busy.

We're pleased to say we have restocked the wooden wall art, just in from Milan. We have the ones which sold out too quickly for most to have seen them last time, and found new ones for this season. We have robins, two-story birdhouses, great tits and more deer.

Coming flatpacked to build yourself, they have already been a popular choice to send as a gift through the post. If you need to know how much Royal Mail will charge for this, we're happy to work it out for you.

"You and Your Wedding" magazine featured a lot of chocolates we have at Pierrot et Coco. We have the always popular Charbonnel et Walker mini truffle hearts, huge chocolate coins, the little boxes 'For a good boy' and 'For a Good Girl' and the Prestat heart boxes.

It's especially nice because Christmas has somehow morphed into a taste-free and gaudy time of year for some, and we hoped to retain a stylishness yet show some festive spirit with our packaging.

We made it to ONE!

The invitations have been printed, we've decided on the date (although not the full drinks list as yet) and we hope to see you there! We celebrate our first birthday on Thursday November 24th and we're having an evening of discounts across the shop, exciting new arrivals and tasty treats.

It's been a quick year, and we're glad to have made it to the ripe old age of one!

When we first took over the dishevelled coach house in Abbot Street, we had high hopes for it...but when electricians and plasterers and joiners and tilers decided they couldn't work because "the World Cup was on" we were disheartened and found it hard to see the day coming when we would finally open our doors to the public.

It took 6 months, but eventually on a dark and snowy day at the end of November we were able to say "we're open!" to a lovely bunch of loyal and interesting/interested customers with very fine taste!

We're not fans of insipid children's decor, so the newest arrivals make us very happy.

We have two styles of cushion - one has a Mark Ryden-esque design with an assortment of strange creatures...and the other has an adorable doe design with blue pom-pom edging.

Both perfect for a child's bedroom, or used correctly will work in a more adult environment.

Darjeeling...the Champagne of Teas.

It's been birthday season at Pierrot et Coco, and we've received many lovely gifts of Champagne, which we've happily sipped for a special breakfast treat. However, for everyday, all day drinking we turn to the rather special tea which is Darjeeling and often referred to as "The Champagne of Tea".

Only grown in a specific region of West Bengal in the Himalayan foothills, this is the world's most expensive tea, following strict guidelines of cultivation, growth, production and manufacture. Skilled pluckers begin early in the morning when overnight dew is still present, on difficult hilly terrain, and choose the smallest shoots comprising two leaves and a bud of which 22, 000 shoots are needed to make 1kg of the tea.

We have Darjeeling No 37 by Kusmi in the decorative black and gold round caddy. A black tea with a light taste and coppery hue. We drink it without milk or sugar, but it's suited to both of these things if you prefer. We also have Irish Blend which is Darjeeling and Assam and a good tea for brunch.

So, when you are unable to drink bubbles from Epernay on a daily basis, look to the connoisseurs tea and indulge yourself this way. We have a choice of teapots with built-in filters, decorative tea balls and disposable tea filters to make drinking loose-leaf tea easy and practical.

We have a limited number of free samples available for you to take home and try.

Pop-Up Children's Wall Art

We've received a lot of children's designs from France in the last couple of weeks. Possibly our favourites are the huge wall designs which simply pop-up and secure with a velcro fastening then attach to a wall.

We have "Pandaccoustique" - the guitar playing panda with a charming top-hatted bird friend and "Dragondule" the striking Chinese dragon with a pendulum-like body which swings from side to side making his eyes look from left to right.

They come in large packaging which will make for an impressive gift for a child at £18.

Chocolate Week - Join us!

We're celebrating "Chocolate Week" this Saturday by having many different chocolates available for you to taste...We haven't decided just yet which ones exactly but there are sure to be some Mr Stanley's dark chocolate fondants, a few Charbonnel et Walker treats, some Hope & Greenwood chocolate dusted nuts, Summerdown dark chocolate peppermint crisp and if that's not enough we'll have little cups of Charbonnel hot chocolate to heat you up on a no-doubt chilly day.

We hope to see you on Saturday, it would be a shame not to partake in this British week of indulgence!

Tea Break at home

The shop might be closed, but we're still working at home, planning the chocolate tasting day (this Saturday 15th) for Chocolate Week.

To make things more enjoyable while we work, we're drinking Kusmi Tea's Four Red Fruits - one of the newest teas we received. It's a black tea from China flavoured with natural essences of cherry, strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry and makes a warming autumnal afternoon drink. Kusmi suggest we eat it with a pastry, and we think hot cherry pie would be just the thing, but sadly have neither of these delicious treats today...

Making our tea seem even more special, we are drinking it from more of our new arrivals - the metallic gold mugs with swallow design inside. And pouring our tea from the elegant tall gold teapot. We feel very swish.

Now to get on with the serious work of which chocolates we'll be sampling in the shop this Saturday...

Introducing Stephanie Simek

I was introduced to a designer from the US several years ago when I was a fashion stylist working for overseas magazines. Her work was brilliant, but the kind of editorial I did called out for larger pieces and I was never able to use any of her designs in a fashion shoot.

Fast Forward a few years and looking for a new range for the shop I remembered Stephanie Simek and her beautiful pieces...Her Quail's Egg necklace was just perfect for us! She uses real Japanese eggs and strengthens them with resin, lines them with 23k gold leaf and hangs them on a 14k gold chain.

As our new table is decorated with a large white Egret on a long branch, Stephanie's necklaces were a perfect choice - complimenting the taxidermy whilst being completely wearable. Unusual enough to become a 'signature' piece for anyone who wears one and when not around your neck, hang in a bell jar as we have, for an interior talking piece.

Charbonnel et Walker has arrived

We're incredibly happy to have been chosen as an offical "Charbonnel et Walker" chocolates stockist. We are of course in good company as they're by appointment to Her Majesty the Queen.

We have a good range, some chosen for their suitablity for men (our previous chocolates from Prestat came in hot pink boxes some deemed too feminine for the men in their lives!) but all because they taste very, very good.

At our party last week, Charbonnel were pretty generous in giving us a big box of dark Marc de Champagne truffles for everyone to try. They were very well received (of course!) and the beautiful packaging of such delicious chocolates are a brilliant addition to our shop.

We viewed these Cremes Parisiennes suspiciously, thinking they were toothache-in-a-box, but we tried some and looked at each other wide-eyed in delight as we realised they were pretty fantastic. Thinking we couldn't have managed one soon turned into wondering if we could stop short of finishing the box.

The Pink marc de Champagne truffles come in a little heart shaped box, a perfect "thank you" gift, "I love you" treat or an add-on to another gift.

These are the ones we've chosen with men in mind. We know women love chocolate in all its forms, but men can quite often be more choosy. For this reason, we've gone for stylish, gentlemanly packaging in classic flavours such as dark chocolate gingers, mints, maple pecans and chocolate enrobed orange.

We've saved the best for last though...we spent a long time trying every drinking chocolate on the market, from nice looking tins you can find in the supermarket to celebrated macaron maker and confectioner du jour, Pierre Herme in Paris. None come even close to Charbonnel et Walker's tin of chocolate flakes, ready for whisking into hot milk as a perfect breakfast or suppertime drink. We advise you to buy a tin, curl up with a good book or film and luxuriate in its deliciousness!

New & Rather Lovely mini's

We've received another exciting delivery from Italy, a whole host of lovely Ortigia products to keep you smelling divine throughout autumn and winter.

There's a new product (and we're the only ones in Scotland with it at the moment), a perfume oil in travel-size to match the other popular items in the mini range and it comes so beautifully packaged in a little foil box with Ortigia's signature palm tree at the top.

We have packaged these four mini's up in a gorgeous blue Ortigia bag, with a roll-on cologne/perfume oil, soap, bath salts and bath/shower gel for £25. These are a brilliant gift for men and women as it allows the recipient to try the smaller items before making a bigger investment in the full-sized products. We really appreciated how many of you came out to our "party" last night. We loved how many of you enjoyed a whole host of cocktails (one really isn't enough!) and that you took a little cupcake (from the Little Cake Parlour) "for the road" and that you found it difficult to speak because there was too much Charbonnel et Walker truffle in your mouth...

Thanks for being so patient while we wrote receipts, waited on the card machine to be swapped from one to another and wrapped your purchases...we'll try to figure out a more efficient way of doing things for the next one.

We have been planning another event for our 1st Birthday, sometime in November, so we'll work on some wintery (cinnamon/orange/apple/caramel/ginger) type cocktails & treats for then and let you know of the date asap.

Freak! You've bought the card, double insult with the notebook

Possibly our most popular card has been the "Happy Birthday ya Freak!" design. We love how readily you bought it to insult those closest to you, your sisters and best friends.

We've now got the hardback notebook with the wonderfully stern, thick rimmed spectacled woman on the front and back. The thing we like most is the "Freak" foiled spine. Will look just perfect on a bookshelf!

Old fashioned chocolates, super delicious!

We've chosen another two chocolate brands to sit alongside Prestat this season, and they are the fabulous and famous Charbonnel et Walker (coming soon!) and the charmingly old-fashioned Hope & Greenwood.

Today, our Hope & Greenwood chocolates arrived - they also do the Mr Stanley's range and we had a wonderful afternoon with lots of tea and far too many samples of their really quite delicious flavours.

They come in lovely striped boxes and we have rose, violet and lime fondant creams covered with dark chocolate - all only £4.50 a box. We were all in agreement the flavours were great and as we tasted each new flavour it became our newest favourite (yes, we're fickle!)

We've also got some traditional peanut brittle and my personal childhood favourite, chocolate coated honeycomb...plus girly birdhouse boxes filled with chocolate pecans or chocolate dusted caramelised almonds...£6.50

Possibly our favourite item is the "For a Good Girl" or "For a Good Boy" miniature boxes, tied with red printed ribbon and filled with foil covered chocolate eggs. A lovely treat for a child, or the childlike :)

They arrived from Italy today! Our magnificent wooden deer and birds, brilliant wall or shelf objet d'art.

They come flat packed, to easily take home, pop-out and build, then secure to your wall for instant "oohhh". We can't decide which is our favourite; as each one is built it becomes nicer than the last.

We have 5 different styles of bird sitting on branches or birdhouse and 4 styles of deer, in small, medium and large. Prices are from £22 for the small birdhouse to £89 for the largest stag.

A Rare and Gentle thing...

We love the new addition to our wall - 16 beautiful taxidermy butterflies, framed and housed beneath glass.

They're quite fascinating and incredibly lovely, with exotic names such as The Orange Albatross and The Archduke.

Although they look splendid in a 4x4 formation, we do sell them singly @ £15.

On a larger wall, they're perfect for hanging next to the Skeletal System, Natural History of Birds & Butterfly posters.

You may have seen a lot more colourful socks have arrived with us lately - we're excited to have more of Sweden's brightest export, Happy Socks.

In winter, just as we opened we chose mostly subdued, muted tones in merino wool and hemp but now it's just about summer we've gone for the cheerful stripes and spots in colours which really do say "happy". They are all one-size for men and women (we've found if they're a tad too big just tumble dry after their first wash and they fit smaller feet perfectly)

We've also gone for some over-the-knee styles just for ladies.

It's jam-packed with photos of outfits and purchases by a Southside girl and an ex-Southside girl (who was driven out by the squirrels and rats having midnight soirees in her kitchen)

Remarkable Praliné Quail's Eggs...almost too nice to eat

We've just started our own range of chocolates and after many, many tasting sessions we are convinced we have a truly delicious product in an even nicer box topped with a big satin bow. I'm not sure I could bring myself to open this box if I bought it...but the draw of the chocolates inside would definitely win over.

Each box has 10 large, powder blue speckled "quails eggs" - filled with Belgian hazelnut praline and stacked in a metallic cake case. Everyone who has sampled them has given loud moans of appreciation, and as they're fairly big and quite rich, one with a cuppa is quite satisfying.

Our own range of chocolates is due to expand soon with dark chocolate gingers, turkish delight and other delicacies still in the sampling stage (oh the hardship!)They're a great complement to the Prestat we have (Pink Marc de Champagne, Rose & Violet Creams, Banoffee truffles and the classic mixed jewel boxes)

We are delighted to be the exclusive independent stockist in Scotland of the beautifully designed range of Mor Cosmetics from Australia. When we first saw Mor's advertising campaign called "Wonderlandia" the imagery alone sold the products to us, so it was especially good to know the fragrances within are as good as the boxes they come in. Celebrating their 10 year anniversary, Mor, which means Peacock in Hindi has a truly enticing range with triple milled soaps, body butters, lip glosses and balms, hand creams and body washes, perfume oils, elixirs and candles.

We spent a long time sampling the olfactory delights and settled on a wide selection which includes Marshmallow, Italian Blood Orange, Cucumber & Casaba, Lychee Flower, Indian Pomelo, Cassis Noir and Snow Gardenia. Perfect as gifts, we also have Mor's range of products in tins from £18 per set. The "Lip Delight" range are lip balms which come in pretty oval tins with aqua coloured sorbet being our favourite flavour.

We're trying to give the shop a spring makeover. Nothing too momentous, as we've only been open a few months, but every few days will see another change as new designers and brands are brought in and popular pieces restocked.

Our swan-necked lady on the centre table wears a rather magnificent necklace and earring by St Erasmus. He has designed for Givenchy, Matthew Williamson, Alexander McQueen, Erickson Beamon and his own label is jewellery perfection; Her arms, suspended from the ceiling wear a matching St Erasmus ring and three rings from French designers Les Nereides which are perfectly oversized solitary pearls with a Pierrot design.

New additions to the table include pumpkin shaped or huge gold glass decanters, beautiful glass plates with vintage imagery, miniature rabbit topped dishes to keep curls of butter for the most civilized soiree. A delightful Easter gift are our apothecary jars filled with triple milled French soaps in the shape of blue Robin's Eggs.

A brilliant jewellery range we have is "Know Your Onions" - all handmade in England by Jayne Simmonds who previously worked for Wedgwood and Royal Doulton and who has conceived a striking line of etched resin brooches and pendants which are reminiscent of scrimshaw whalebone.

Choose just one alphabet brooch for everyday wear, or choose several to spell something out..we have ampersands, exclamation marks and question marks too in case there's nothing profound you need to write across your lapel. These are an amazing buy as an extra little gift at only £6 each.

Newly arrived this morning, we have more of the vintage-style stationery range from San Francisco's Cavallini & Co. We'll have so many postcard tins, notebooks, sticky notes and labels with irresistibe designs we don't know where it's all going to go...

And the range we're most excited about is the luxurious Mor Cosmetics from Australia. This will be with us this week - we were sold just by the packaging, but thankfully, each scent is just as good as the box it comes in and we struggled to narrow this collection down so we decided to go for almost every fragrance they make. They have delicious names such as Cassis Noir, Italian Blood Orange or Indian Pomelo...and beautiful box sets and tins perfect as Mother's Day gifts. Lots of photos of this range coming very soon!

Happy it's March!

While the weather is definitely changeable, we're very happy it's March. Spring is on its way and with it comes some new additions to our stock.

We're hanging onto the bulk of the new things for a few more days so it can all be displayed just right as we want it to have the best impact.

However, one delivery is hanging on the wall already, and although it's only just March we believe these are an excellent alternative to an Easter egg for children.

These cut-out-and-make animal sets are really fabulous. Designed by Madeleine Rogers under the "Mibo" brand in Brighton they're a great way of spending some time with the children over the Easter holidays and will look brilliant on a shelf in their bedroom afterwards. They first caught my eye in Elle Deco which featured the set of Christmas creatures.

Choose from the Rabbits or Chicks for a lovely springtime treat for children ages 6 and over, although we know many adults who would be happy to while away a Sunday afternoon with this project...

Other sets include such charming creatures as "Fru Fox" and Wallace the sleepy eyed owl...

Another wonderful idea from Mibo are the Fox and Lion tea towels...use them in the kitchen or cut out, sew and stuff to make your own little animal.

We're happy to have the range of M.Sasek books back again after they sold out before Christmas.

Although intended as destination books for children, we know many adults who are happy to have these on their bookshelf because they perfectly capture the 50's/60's in a charming way.

Written and illustrated by Miroslav Sasek in the late 50's, these hardback books are a delight to read and use as a guide book with a child. The illustrations are good enough to frame and and the text is playful and witty.

We have "This is London", "This is Paris", "This is Edinburgh", "This is Great Britain", "This is New York" and "This is the Way to the Moon".

We're asked several times a day in the shop if the lights, the furniture and a lot of the display pieces are for sale. Paris, je t'aime

It's at this time of year thoughts should turn to Paris...as we dream of leaving behind frosty mornings and too many layers, the best place to escape to when the weather becomes a little more spring-like has to be the City of Lights.

With a two year old and a new shop I doubt we'll be seeing Paris this year while the cherry blossoms are still on the trees, but as a bit of a Francophile I have made up for this, just a little, by making sure we have plenty of Paris themed pieces for sale...

From the best Paris shopping books which show you behind the hidden doorways you never imagined were open to the public, to fabulous vintage charms reworked into stylish Parisian necklaces and brooches showing the Moulin Rouge or simply saying "Oui".

We have Cavallini & Co notebooks which are the best way to record your own travel experiences so you always have a reference of the best restaurant or most fabulous shop you found for next time you go. Some even have pockets to keep those special metro tickets or cafe receipts. We also have the pretty tins of Paris glittered postcards which we all agree are too nice to send through the post and should be hung on walls...a big poster showing the old Paris arrondissements and of course a big Eiffel Tower one too.

PiP Studio

One of the most popular ranges we've bought for Pierrot et Coco has been the pretty PiP Studio collection from the Netherlands.

The delightful pieces with strong floral patterns are perfect for spring tables indoors and out. We can imagine home-made cakes (or perhaps try The Little Cake Parlour just along from us on Pollokshaws Road to be guaranteed of a good looking job!) and dainty sandwiches piled high on the cake stands, surrounded by the cups and saucers, teapots, jugs, bowls and plates on a big table with lots of great tea and good friends.

Most people are surprised at how affordable it is - prices start at only £3 for the little egg cups and around £6 for soupl bowls and mugs, so it's a great set to start collecting or treating oneself to a little cup and saucer and cake plate for lazy afternoons.

We stuck to the blue and pink sets originally but are about to add in PiP's third colourway which is a neutral beige/khaki shade and mixes perfectly with the other two colours.

We'll have the cup and mug box sets again too - these sold out in a couple of days last time and we expect them to be as popular again as the big red "embroidered" box makes for a beautiful gift and a perfect place for keepsakes when you've taken the cups out.

Another new additon from PiP will be the beautiful Lovebird collection which I have been eagerly awaiting since its launch in Holland at the end of last year. The strong stripes and bright colours cry out for strawberry tarts and Mad Hatter's tea parties!

On the run-up to Christmas we opened 7 days a week, until 6.30pm.

Now things are a bit quieter, we'd like a 'weekend' to spend with our little boy, so will be closed on Sundays and Mondays for the time being.

We do plan on opening longer hours as the days become warmer and the nights lighter, but our January/February hours will be :

Sweet Love

Passing by a card shop today, I noticed their window was filled with big fluffy bears holding love hearts and foily red chocolates. This type of Valentine's show of affection is not for everyone (or anyone over the age of 12?) so we've been thinking of our own way to bring some love into the shop without it being saccharine overload.

We have a rather nice French theme planned, with Je t'aime chocolates, fab lollipops, "Amour" necklaces, travel books and cards that say "I love you" without going down the padding and frills route...

Until this is installed, we have a mini display centred around Kusmi Tea's "Sweet Love" Indian blend. It's had rave reviews from everyone who likes a proper cup of tea, and who could resist breakfast in bed on February 14th with a cuppa which comes in a tin like this?!

It seems every second person coming into our shop just now has a new baby to buy for...We know from experience that clothes are quite personal so aren't always an ideal newborn gift and toys are a bit futile for one so little. This is where our new "Boo Boo Baby" range is a perfect choice.

Kusmi from Paris to Glasgow.

One of our favourite brands in the shop is the rather luxurious, well designed and really very stylish Kusmi tea from Paris. We searched high and low for just the right kind of tea to sell at Pierrot et Coco. It had to have provenance and a long standing reputation for quality, yet look good enough to stand up to any contemporary company. Many of the Parisian and English tea houses are well established but the boxes and caddies look fuddy-duddy.

Enter Kusmi, founded in St-Petersburg by Pavel Kousmichoff it was certainly old enough to be of interest to us, with a captivating story which takes us from Russian in 1867 to Paris during the Revolution, so we sampled many flavours. Too many flavours for one morning! We knew the flavours were quite exquisite, gourmet blends for the loose tea connoisseur - all the classics, Darjeeling, Lapsang Souchong, Rooibos, English Breakfast, Earl Grey and new additons with their fabulous flavours of cinnamon, rose, violet, mint chocolate with intense smells to entice even the non-tea drinker.

But it was the packaging which really sold it to us. Beautiful metal tins with colourful labels and art-nouveau style floral lids re-designed for a market which understands quality and style. Perfect tins to display on kitchen shelves or re-use to store trinkets, but certainly too nice to throw away when the tea is long gone.

You may have seen Kusmi at one of their Paris stores - such as the pop-up shop on the Champs -Elyesees before Christmas or in Galeries Lafayette.

We have arrived!

It has taken us many months to get here, but finally, Pierrot et Coco has arrived at 3 Abbot Street, Shawlands, Glasgow.

At the beginning of 2010, we knew Glasgow had space for a design-led lifestyle boutique as many high profile designers and brands of the moment were not represented anywhere in Scotland.

When we were shown a characterful standalone building in Glasgow's southside, we knew we could work some magic with the very dishevelled former vintage shop. Choosing Shawlands was an easy decision; we join an increasing number of independent shops and cafes within strolling distance of Queens Park, with parking right outside our door (the same can't be easily said of the city centre or west end) and we've already got some of the most supportive and enthusiastic local customers we could have hoped for.

We didn't think it would take the best part of a year to turn the ramshackle former coach house into the sweet smelling, custom designed haven which opened its doors only three weeks before Christmas, but happily, when the walls were fixed, the ceiling removed and floor replaced we could move in our cabinets and bookcases, display our wares and we're satisfied with the final results.

We are thrilled to bring some of the most press-worthy designers from a selection of genres for men, women, children and the home to a discerning Glasgow audience...we plan on the shop being an evolving retail space where nothing gets too stagnant and new finds added continually.
